Eel Stardew Valley Guide: Fishing Fun

Latest posts by Ella Walsh (see all)

One of the many skills in Stardew Valley is Fishing; the key to becoming a successful fisherman (or woman) in Stardew Valley is to develop an understanding of the different types of Fish in terms of where they live (River, Lake, Ocean, etc.) It also helps to learn the requirements and availabilities of each FishFish in terms of the season, weather, and time it is available.

As these vary a lot between each Fish it can be super overwhelming! I did not look into Fishing at all until I needed to complete the Fish Tank room of the Community Centre (Which I also left to last as I was so confused) Whether you’re a seasoned fisher who needs a refreshed or like I was, you simply don’t know where to start; I got you covered! (On Eels at least).

Bottom Line Up Front

Eel are ocean-dwelling Fish that can only be caught in the rain between the hours of 4 pm, and 2 am in Spring and Fall. Although if you apply the Magic Bait, you can catch the Eel in any weather, season, and time!

The primary use for the Eel is in the Night-Time Fishing Bundle in the Fish Tank, although Eel can also be gifted to Demetrius, Elliot, Leo, Linus, Pam, Sebastian, and Willy. The Eel can also be used to create Maki Roll, Fried Eel, Spicy Eel, Sashimi, and Quality Fertilizer.

If you struggle to find the Eel, you can purchase it from the Travelling Cart which visits Pelican Town on Fridays and Sundays.

How to obtain Eel

Fishing

The Eel is an ocean-dwelling fish that can be found between the hours of 4 pm and 2 am. It can only be found in either Spring or Fall and can also only be found in rainy weather. The Eel has a difficulty rating of 70 which can make it a challenge! It has a smooth behavior pattern which means it moves at a fairly steady and predictable pace and direction.

If you struggle to catch the Eel between 4 pm and 2 am, or you don’t want to wait until it is raining, you can always purchase and attach Magic Bait. This means that you will be able to catch the Eel in any weather, any time, and in any season. (Although it can still only be found in the Ocean)

To do this however you need to upgrade your fishing rod as this cannot be applied to a training rod, these can be purchased from Willy’s fish shop.

Purchasing

While Eel can not be purchased from Pierre‘s General Store, it can occasionally be found in the Travelling Cart, which visits the Town on Friday and Sundays and closes on each day at 8 pm.

The Travelling Cart does not hold a lot of items, so the Eel is not guaranteed; therefore, if you need to purchase this and are unable to catch one, you should visit the Travelling Cart every day that it is in Town. If you do decide to purchase the Eel from the Travelling Cart, you should ensure you have a good supply of Gold as the Travelling Cart is expensive, and the Eel can cost anywhere between 225g and 1000g.

Looting

Occasionally Eel can be found in the bins along with Pelican Town in Stardew Valley; the bins can be searched through once a day per each bin.

This can give you honestly almost anything; Eels are only one of many many options, including trash and wet newspaper! So if you need Eel for a time-limited Quest or because you are eager to complete the Community Centre, I would not rely on this option.

Uses for Eel

Recipes

The Eel can be used in a variety of recipes, which is one of the main attractions in catching fish (for me at least) such as;

Fried Eel

To create this, you will need 1x Eel and 1x Oil; once this is created, it can be consumed to provide 75 energy and 33 health points. Consuming the Fried Eel also gives you a Luck Buff for seven minutes, which means that you have an increased chance of finding Geodes and getting treasure when Fishing.

To create the Fried Eel, you first need the recipe which is provided to you by George once you reach three hearts in your relationship with him. If you do not want to consume the Fried Eel, it can also be sold for 120g.

Maki Roll

To create this, you will need 1x Eel, 1x Seaweed, and 1x Rice. Once this is created, it can be consumed to provide 100 energy and 45 health points. To create this, you need to get the recipe either from watching the Queen of Sauce channel on the TV in your house on the 21st of Summer or by purchasing the recipe from the Stardrop Saloon for 300g. The Maki Roll can also be sold for 220g.

Sashimi

To create this, you will need 1x Eel. Once this is created, it can be consumed to provide 75 energy and 33 health points. To create this, you need to get the recipe from Linus by reaching three hearts in your relationship with him. You can also sell Sashimi for 75g.

Spicy Eel

To create this, you need 1x Eel and 1x Hot Pepper. Once this is created, it can be consumed to provide 115 energy and 51 health points. This will also provide a Luck buffer for seven minutes and a Speed buffer for seven minutes. To create the Spicy Eel, you first need the recipe which is provided to you by George once you reach seven hearts in your relationship with him. If you do not want to consume the Spicy Eel, it can also be sold for 175g.

Quality Fertilizer

To create this, you will need 1x Eel and 2x Sap. This can then be applied to tilled soil before planting any crops; doing so increases the chances of producing quality crops. This requires farming level nine; however, to create the Quality Fertilizer, it can also be sold for 10g.

Gifting

The Eel can be gifted to others within the Town; however, it is not a great gift. Only Demetrius, Elliot, Leo, Linus, Pam, Sebastian, and Willy are neutral to this, while everyone else within the Town either dislikes or hates Eel.

Bundles

The Eel can also be donated to the Community Centre to complete the Night Fishing Bundle in the Fish Tank. Completing the Night Fishing Bundle will also require 1x Walleye and 1x Bream.

The reward for completing the Night Fishing Bundle is one small glow ring that provides light around you when worn; this makes exploring easier at night as it gives increased visibility and is particularly useful for mining or Fishing late at night-completing all bundles in the Fish Tank rewards you by removing the boulder over the space left of the Mines. In doing so, you will now be able to pan in the water for objects and ore.

Quests

Eel is not required to complete any story or progression-based Quests. However, Eel can sometimes be requested by the members of the Town. These requests will appear on the Help Wanted Board outside Pierre’s General Store. Completing the request will reward you with 255g and 150 Friendship points between you and whoever has requested the Eel.

Pond

Once you catch an Eel, you can place it in the Pond at your Farm; once placed, it will reproduce every three days, which will allow you a constant supply of Eel.

Eel Stardew Valley: Summary

While Eel is relatively hard to catch, they are also super rewarding, especially if you are eager to finish the Community Centre and put the dang JojaMart out of business (Like I was).

Once you have completed this, if you still have Eel, they make some delicious dishes (you can also keep them in a Fish Tank in your room for some extra ambiance). Eel is not needed for Quests and doesn’t make great gifts, so why not use them decoratively? You can also place the Eel in the Pond at your Farm, where they will continue to reproduce the new Eel every three days.
